Inexpensive Wedding Cake Ideas

If you're a couple planning your wedding on a tight budget, you'll want wedding cake ideas that let you have an elegant, unique cake as a central part of your reception -- without having to pay over the odds.

Wedding cakes come in all styles, sizes and shapes (for example, square or heart shapes). You can use your imagination and creativity to come up with affordable ideas that suit your theme and number of guests. Do your research early: look at wedding cake pictures or photos in magazines or online to give yourself ideas for suitable wedding cake designs.

Traditionally, people often think of tiered cakes when they think of weddings, but there are many ways that you can bring your own artistic flair to make your cake stand out on its own.

Here are some tips to keeping your cake costs down:

You can make extra cake accents and dividers in advance to be brought to your wedding party.

Unique homemade dividers can be made from oversized brandy glasses: you can accent these with ribbons tied around the bottom flute of the glass and flip the glasses upside down in order to allow room for the cake sections.

The glass bottoms will also make a nice sturdy separator for the cake layers to sit on. You could perhaps place candles or other decorations inside the upturned glasses as an added accent.

As well as ribbons, you can also use decorations such as rhinestones to make your cake stand out. This would add an elegant touch and your decoration could be re-used later.

Looking at wedding cakes is great fun, and you'll get many ideas from what you see in pictures, shop windows and online. Let your imagination run free to create your own design for a unique wedding cake.
